The transport from Bolzano to the Renon High Plateau was provided more than 100 years ago by a cog railway

The history of the Renon Cable Car dates back to 1907, the Belle Époque, when a Swiss-type rack railway was inaugurated on the Piazza Walther square. It led visitors on the Renon, a popular summer resort now and then. In 1966 it was replaced by a cable car. The historical "Rittner Bahnl", the Renon Train operating between Maria Assunta (Maria Himmelfahrt, in German), Soprabolzano (Oberbozen) and Collalbo (Klobenstein), still reminds of those days and the old railway line.
In 2009 the Renon Cable Car was renovated and replaced by a new 3S cable car. It starts from the Via Renon road near Bolzano's old town and takes visitors to Soprabolzano at 1,221 m a.s.l. Eight large cabins with panorama windows start every four minutes and take 30 people each in 12 minutes to the Renon. They offer a stunning view on the town, the Valle dell'Adige valley and the surrounding peaks up to where the ascent reaches the meadows of the high plateau. By the way: Another cable car leads from Pemmern to Mt. Punta Lago Nero near Mt. Corno del Renon.
