The Alps are among the longest and best floristically studied mountain ranges in the world. Despite the good knowledge of the distribution of the plants found in the Alps, it has not yet been possible to visualise the distribution of these species on a large scale on a common platform.
In 2023, the ‘Flora Atlas Alpina’ project was launched to remedy this situation and create an online distribution atlas of the same name for all 4500 ferns and flowering plants in the Alps. The project is being driven forward by a working group with representatives from all Alpine regions.
At the lecture ‘Atlas Flora Alpina - a new online atlas for the entire Alpine arc’ on Friday, 24 January at 6 pm at the South Tyrol Museum of Nature, Thomas Wilhalm will provide insights into the ambitious project and can already present impressive results. The curator of botany at the Nature Museum is also a member of the ‘Atlas Flora Alpina’ consortium.
Admission is free. Registration on the museum's website is recommended.
The lecture can also be viewed online on the museum's YouTube channel.
