For the 38th time, the Bolzano Film Festival Bolzano (BFFB) brings the best of international cinema to the big screen and welcomes high-calibre guests to the heart of the South Tyrolean capital. As a festival with a strong multilingual character in a border region steeped in history, the BFFB pays particular attention to what is happening on the other side of the border and closely follows local film production. The programme often focuses on the stories of minorities, be they of a linguistic, political or social nature.
BFFB 38 will officially open on Friday, 4 April with the Italian premiere of the debut film Little Trouble Girls (Kajti Je Deklica) by Slovenian director Urška Djukić. The film, which is screening in competition and was awarded the FIPRESCI prize in the ‘Perspectives’ section at the 75th Berlin Film Festival, tells the story of Lucija, a shy 16-year-old girl who joins a girls' choir and befriends the spirited Ana-Marija. During a retreat in a monastery, Lucija's interest in a restorer puts the relationship between the two girls to the test and leads Lucija to explore her own identity and sexuality.
The festival closes with the tragicomedy Mariana Trench by Eileen Byrne, a road trip that leads the audience through grief and pain to new perspectives. Co-produced by Albolina (Bolzano) in collaboration with Samsa Film (Luxembourg) and Film AG (Austria) and financed by the IDM Film Commission Südtirol, the film will be distributed in Italy by Trent Film from 24 April.
