Description
On October 12, 2024, on Romanesque Day, you will have the opportunity to experience the mystical world of the Romanesque period in South Tyrol during free guided tours of 31 impressive cultural sites along the "Alpine Romanesque Road". From Burgeis to Neumarkt and Innichen, churches, castles, chapels and monasteries open their doors on this special day to present the art and cultural treasures of this period.
The castle chapel at Hocheppan Castle also invites all interested parties on this day. This chapel is considered one of the most important Romanesque monuments to art in South Tyrol and impresses with its valuable frescoes. The frescoes, which were only fully uncovered in 1926, date back to the first decade of the 13th century. In addition to religious motifs, rare secular depictions can also be found here, such as a hunting scene on the outer wall. The frescoes of the foolish virgins and the dumpling eater - the first pictorial evidence of Tyrolean dumplings - are particularly well-known.
The Romanesque Day offers a unique opportunity to discover the cultural and historical treasures of South Tyrol and to experience the fascinating architecture and works of art of the Romanesque period up close.
