Salorno Castle

Above the Chiusa di Salorno (Salurner Klause), on the - also linguistic - border between South Tyrol and the Trentino, there's Salorno Castle: It was built as a secure fortress on a limestone rock spur in the "Geierwände" cliffs, 125 m above the village centre. This castle was not easily attackable! A first building was already mentioned in written documents as "castellum Salurna" from 1053 AD on. Various owners changed over the centuries, including the Counts of Appiano, the Counts of Tyrol, the Venetian patrician family Zenobio and the Counts Albrizzi.

After Salorno Castle gradually lost its strategic importance, the complex fell into decay from the 17th century onwards. Its reconstruction and consolidation was initiated by baron Ernesto Rubin de Cervin Albrizzi and could be completed in 2003 with the aid of official financial contributions. The impressive castle complex can be reached today in a 20-minute walk following the steep "Path of Visions". It houses also the "Zum 18. Fass" tavern which invites in summer to eat and drink in the courtyard and the Knighs' Hall. Also guided tours, workshops and concerts are offered.
