The main seat of the six Messner Mountain Museums can be found at Castel Firmiano in Frangarto near Appiano

Firmiano (Sigmundskron) is a special place: As early as 945, the first castle was mentioned here, which means that Firmiano can look back on more than 1,000 years of history. Furthermore it has an important role for South Tyrol: in 1957, the demonstration at the castle under the leadership of Silvius Magnago demanded autonomy for South Tyrol. The present castle, actually a ruin, is in the hands of the South Tyrolean provincial administration and has been seat of one of the six museums of Reinhold Messner since 2006, the MMM Firmian. The name was chosen with mindful consideration: it is the original name of the castle from the 12th century on (formerly "Formicaria").
The museum, dedicated to "The enchanted mountain", offers a permanent exhibition on the confrontation between man and mountain. Paths and stairways take visitors through the castle and into its towers and show the beauty of the complex as well as several artworks. Sitting Buddhas await you just as modern statues and a wonderful view on the Valle dell'Adige valley and Bolzano. A small tavern and changing thematic exhibitions complete the museum adventure.
