The beautiful Arcades of Bolzano (Bozen) are also a meeting point of the past and the future: The historical alley in the old town houses the first virtual museum of South Tyrol, completely dedicated to the technical cultural heritage of the region. It is managed by the Board for Technical Cultural Heritage, which started to organise symposia, exhibitions and other events back in 1995. In 2005, the associated Museum of Technology called Tecneum was inaugurated.
Its database tells 200 years of cultural-technological innovation on the basis of specific examples such as hydroelectric power plants, pass roads, cable cars, railway facilities, architectural highlights and the pioneers in this sector. It is divided into three parts: technical milestones, geographical locations and historically continuing points of reference. The Tecneum adventure may be continued open-air: Along the so-called "Technology Mile" which follows the South Tyrolean cycle path network there are 50 selected cultural-technological highlights to admire.
