The Free University of Bozen-Bolzano is not - as usual - government-funded, but managed and funded by the Autonomous Province of Bozen-Bolzano. Together with the ones of Trento and Innsbruck, the University of Bolzano belongs to the biggest educational institutions of the Tyrol-South Tyrol-Trentino Euroregion, formed to promote the cross-border cooperation between Italy and Austria. The study programmes on offer are Bachelor, Master and Phd for the five faculties:
- Agricultural, Environmental and Food Sciences
- Design and Art
- Economics and Management
- Education
- Engineering
One of the main focuses is on the multilingual education. Besides the three official national languages German, Italian (and Ladin in the Faculty of Education), lessons are taught also in English. The Faculty of Education is located in the town of Bressanone, about 40 km from Bolzano, whereas the Bachelor in Tourism, Sport and Event Management is offered in Brunico (75 km).
Seminars, lectures, traineeships and laboratory work determine the teaching programme at the Free University. Moreover the students spend some semesters studying abroad. The Free University of Bozen-Bolzano is housed in several buildings along the Via dell'Ospedale alley and on the Piazza dell'Università (University Square), only a few steps from the historical centre.
