A massive and eye-catching building rises on the Piazza Verdi square near Bolzano's old town. It is the New Town Theatre, planned by the architect Marco Zanuso and inaugurated in 1999 as a multipurpose building. In its inside there are the big hall which offers 802 seats and several small halls and rooms. Concerts of the Haydn Orchestra of Bolzano and Trento and performances by the Teatro Stabile and the Vereinigte Bühnen Bozen, VBB, are staged here.
The VBB is a professional theatre in German language and represents the biggest theatre company in South Tyrol, whereas the Teatro Stabile offers big prose productions in Italian language - the in-house productions of music theatre and spoken theatre include approx. 120 performances per season. The Bolzano Town Theatre (Stadttheater Bozen, in German - Teatro Comunale di Bolzano, in Italian) offers also space for international productions and festivals such as the "Tanz Bozen - Bolzano Danza" (Bolzano Dance) in summer and the "Bolzano Festival Bozen" for classical music.
