The gem in the Cortaccia Parish Church, from which - according to legend - tears or sweat dropped, is still highly revered
It was on the 28th of November, 1733, when a soldier of the emperor was in the “auf der Platten” farmhouse in Cortaccia. The rosary was prayed as every evening. All of a sudden, he saw drops of tears or sweat in a picture of the Madonna in the parlour. According to eyewitness reports, that special occurrence repeated itself - one of the numerous phenomena which happened on a relatively frequent basis back then. They should prove that the prayers were answered.
The priest of the village reported the phenomenon to the bishop who immediately sent a troop to check the whole thing. The researchers were unable to detect any deception, and the apparition did not recur. On the 17th of July, 1738, the miraculous image of the Madonna was placed on a side altar in the Parish Church of Cortaccia for general veneration. Especially in the time of the great cholera in 1836, the picture was worshiped very much. Also today, the people still pray in front of the miraculous image - the church has become a real pilgrimage site.
