Some time ago, Caldaro started a special initiative to promote wine quality and culture around Lake Caldaro: The General Principles of wein.kaltern (literally: wine.caldaro) say, for example, that Caldaro makes wine knowledge an exiting experience and that wine and village are inseparable linked together. The history of wein.kaltern dates back to 1999, when a project group made of winegrowers, tourism experts and public representatives was established to make Caldaro a typical wine village. This aim was underlined by the creation of the brand "wine and caldaro and dot".
In the last two decades, wein.kaltern has gone a long way and the initiative was enriched by its own concept and several projects. One of them is called wein.weg (wine.trail), a walk through the municipal area, which brings grape varieties and vineyard names closer to visitors. The path leads on already existing trails past beautiful spots and picturesque wine farms down to Lake Caldaro. Every vineyard features a white marble stripe on the ground, which tells in metal letters its original Rhaeto-Romanic name, such as "Vial" or "Puntara".
Furthermore, there are several other products: The wein.wegweiser (wine.guide) - an orientation guide, which includes all partner facilities and shows the vineyards of Caldaro on the back - completes the wein.weg. Another much sought-after product is the wein.glas (wine.glass) with the engraved word wein.kaltern. With the wein.magazin (wine.journal), however, the initiative approaches also in a historical, socially and cultural way the topic of wine. It shows the people behind the wine production, reports on the grape harvest and provides insight into the local cuisine. All products are available at the wein.kaltern office at the Market Square.
wein.kaltern presents itself in Caldaro with massive white limestone slabs at the village entrance and exit. 65 partner facilities - wine producers, accommodations, wine shops and more - support the successful initiative: They can be identified by the Red Dot, a seal of quality at the entrance of the facility. Based on the category, they offer at least seven wine varieties from Caldaro - two-thirds are white and red wines, one-third are Kalterersee Auslese wines (Caldaro D.O.C.) from partner wineries. After all, the Kalterersee Auslese wine made the name of Caldaro world-famous...
