Artful Hiking, stage 3: Caldaro - San Paolo - Predonico

Starting at the market square of Caldaro we walk into the Andreas-Hofer-Straße road and up to the main road. From there we walk towards Prey/Klavenz, always following the marker no. 15, to Pianizza di Sopra (Oberplanitzing) and the Ice Holes (signpost). We pass the natural phenomenon and take the path no. 7a uphill to the Steinegger restaurant where we enjoy a nice view on the Oltradige area. The large, red, onion-domed tower of the San Paolo Parish Church - our next destination - is already visible. We walk downhill on an asphalt road until the village centre of San Paolo. From Caldaro this stage takes about 2.5 hours.

From San Paolo to Predonico/Perdonig:

Our hike starts at the fountain in the village centre of San Paolo. From there we walk into the St. Justina Road uphill (signpost no. 9), then to the right, following the marker "Perdonig/Gaid". On the Missianerweg path (no. 8a) we walk straight ahead. Then we turn left at a lime tree, immediately right again until a fountain and an interesting medieval residential tower. This we pass on the right side. From here the path is well-signposted now. After the viewpoint "Kreuzstein" (large wooden cross) we walk through the forest and past orchards to a water reservoir. Then towards Boymont Castle (no. 9a, castle tavern).

From Boymont Castle we first walk a little road downhill, then into the forest towards Appiano Castle (Schloss Hocheppan), always marker no. 9a. Before we reach the castle we have to climb steep wooden stairs and slightly exposed paths. A head for heights is advisable. If you don't want to take this route, you can descend from Boymont along the access road to a wider road. This you follow until a wine tavern where the forest path up to Appiano Castle starts (with castle tavern). From Appiano Castle we take the path no. 9 to Predonico.
