An Artistic Hike, stage 3: Caldaro - San Paolo - Predonico

Start at the market square (Marktplatz) of Caldaro, walk into the street Andreas-Hofer-Straße and up to the main road, past Gungano. From there walk towards Prey/Klavenz, always following the signpost no. 15, to Pianizza di Sopra (Oberplanitzing) and the Ice Holes. At Pianizza di Sopra you'll have to walk along the road leading up to the passo Mendola for a little while, then turn right to reach the Ice Holes, a natural attraction. After having visited them, take the path no. 7a uphill to the Steinegger restaurant where you enjoy a nice view on the Oltradige area. From here you can already see your next destination, the red onion-dome tower of the San Paolo Parish Church. Descend on a low trafficked asphalt road to the village centre of San Paolo. From Caldaro this stage takes about 2.5 hours.

From San Paolo to Predonico/Perdonig:

The hike starts at the fountain in the village centre of San Paolo. From there you walk into the St. Justina Road uphill (signpost no. 9), then to the right, following the signpost "Perdonig/Gaid". On the Missianerweg path (no. 8a) walk straight ahead. Then turn left at a lime tree, and immediately right until you reach a fountain and an interesting medieval residential tower. Pass by it on the right side. From here on the path is marked very well. After the viewpoint "Kreuzstein", provided with a large wooden cross, walk through the forest and past orchards to a water reservoir. Then towards Boymont Castle (no. 9a, castle tavern).

From the portal of Boymont Castle descend first on a small road, then into the forest towards Appiano Castle (Schloss Hocheppan), always following the signpost no. 9a. Before you reach the castle you have to climb steep wooden stairs and slightly exposed paths. It is fundamental to be free from vertigo to manage this part. If you feel safer by not taking this path, you can descend from Boymont castle along the access road to a wider road. Then you follow the ladder one until you reach an inn from where the forest path up to Appiano Castle starts (provided with a restaurant). From Appiano Castle you take the path no. 9 to Predonico.
