The hike proceeds through a beautiful autumn landscape characterised by the vineyards in the valley and the meadows and colourful forests on the Salto high plateau. Our hike starts at the valley station of the former San Genesio Cable Car in Bolzano, located along the Val Sarentino road. The path no. 2 leads us through the vineyards up to the hamlet San Giacomo (St. Jakob in der Sand) and further on on the paths no. 1A and 1B to the Rafenstein castle ruin. The hike continues on path no. 2 towards San Genesio.
The trail of this second section through the forest varies between a wide forest path and a rather steep and narrow hiking trail. Take special care if the ground is slippery - good footwear and hiking sticks are required! After a while the path gets flatter, we reach the meadows of San Genesio (Jenesien). In the village centre we enjoy our lunch at one of the local restaurants (e.g. Landgasthof Zum Hirschen). For the way back you can take the same route or return by public bus.
