The Margarete Trail is the ascent from Terlano to Neuhaus Castle where “Margarete Maultasch”, Countess of Tyrol, once lived

The pleasant walk to the Neuhaus Castle Ruin starts at the small parking space along the road to Meltina above Terlano. The signpost "Margarethenweg" indicates a downhill forest path following the slope. The Margarete Trail, sometimes also called Margarete Promenade is secured by wooden railings - it's a wide and easy walkable path through the deciduous forest. Only the last section leads uphill to the castle ruin on the old Castle Path. This last section offers an amazing view on the Valle dell'Adige valley including the spa town of Merano and the Tessa Group in the north as well as the Bolzano valley basin and the Oltradige area in the south.
Neuhaus Castle is without doubt the highlight of the tour: The mighty complex built of solid red porphyry stones has been renovated and is a real adventure for kids. The panoramic view it offers makes understandable why the high nobility chose this place in former times. As an alternative, you can start this walk in the village centre of Terlano (Dr. Weiser Square near the church) and follow the signpost no. 9 to the Meltina road. It requires additional 30 minutes each direction.
