The part of the district which is located in the valley bottom is called Oltrisarco. Up to the Middle Ages this area was a swampy alluvial landscape. Coming from south, this area attaches itself to San Giacomo di Laives along the sports area of Maso della Pieve and the cemetery of Bolzano, proceeding towards Via Claudia Augusta in the direction of Monte Virgolo. At the mountainside, there is Aslago, whose name derives from the Haselburg Castle (Castel Flavon), towering above the city district.
The Isarco river and the railway separate the districts Oltrisarco-Aslago from the rest of the city and contribute to the rather rural character of the district. Via Claudia Augusta is the mainline of the city district and this area has in part been calmed regarding traffic in the last years in order to make shopping and ambling more pleasant. From Aslago, numerous hiking trails lead to Monte delle Regole. From Virgolo to Colle di Bolzano or the Chestnut path along Haselburg Castle, there are several possibilities.
