Planities inferior, that is to say "lower plain slope terrace", this is how the village used to be called in ancient times. Out of this name, the German name of the village, "Unterplanitzing", developed. The church of Pianizza di Sotto is dedicated to S. Leonardo, the Gothic part was added to the Roman basis. By the way, in the Roman tract, there are frescoes dating back to the period around 1360.
Once the village was probably also located on the crossing of the South Tyrolean Wine Road and the ancient trail that led to the Mendola, as the churches that were located at crossings of ways were usually dedicated to this patron saint.
Two majestic residences and a series of houses characterise the aspect of the village and line the beautiful Oltradige cycling path stretching below the road.
