Niclara

The small but mighty village of Niclara boasts a vivid history

Located about 1 km in the south of Cortaccia along the Wine Road, there is the small but mighty village of Niclara. Even if it only boasts a humble number of inhabitants of about 150, the village is characterised by a vivid history, as it was once the seat of the court.

Underneath the hill of Niclara there is Castel Turmhof, a residence owned by the Tiefenbrunner family, where also the homonymous cellar is located. The tower of the castle dates back to the Medieval period, while the present-day building is of much younger origins. Interesting is also the fairytale garden in the park of the castle with its swan pond and the variety of fabulous creatures. At Castel Turmhof, also guided visits and wine tastings are offered.

A particular natural phenomenon is represented by the so-called Regenstein, a large tuff, of which water comes out. According to a legend, in its interior, there is a princess jailed, the water that comes out of the stone are her tears. Every 100 years, the princess is supposed to appear, waiting for the prince that releases her from her spell.
